Some people seem to have a problem with my comment I made on Robert Abela being known as a “tuba” from a very young age. The problem with having a dumb prime minister is that the consequences of his actions may be seriously damaging. I list facts and make assessments based on facts. I don’t go out of my way to decorate my stories with diction that intentionally ridicule people and had I done that, rest assured that my content would have been very different. This is the prime minister of our country we are speaking about; a man who literally has the power to change and ruin our lives. He’s not the prime minister to serve as a piece of furniture we ought to admire. If you don’t like facts, you can go to Robert Abela’s Facebook page and read his bullshit rhetoric above the semi-literate “prosit ministru” comments. I’m not the one who creates truths, I only present them to you.
We have already experienced Abela’s recklessness when in the Summer of 2020 he opened the country to English tourists for electronic music parties, and as a result, caused another Covid spread. Once again today, Abela’s recklessness and his hateful distaste for anything logical and rational will leave a severe impact, this time round on our democratic institutions and the rule of law. Abela thinks he is doing something cunning and brilliant by letting the Committee for the Standards of Public Life be the first to censure Justyne Caruana before forcing her to resign. He thinks that letting the committee approve Hyzler’s report before taking any political action constitutes “rule of law” on the mere fact that this is a “process” as he calls it. Tell me once again, why having a dumb Prime Minister is not a problem?
The Labour Party members of parliament who sit on the committee are flustered at the fact that they have to hand down an inevitable censure before Abela makes a move. The prime minister has the ability to ask his minister to resign and reinstate her in case any “procedures” show that no wrongdoing was made. He’s doing the opposite. He’s abandoning his discretionary powers so that he doesn’t make any decisions by himself.
Here we have a prime minister faced with prima facie criminal evidence that his minister and her permanent secretary gave a corrupt contract to her boyfriend, yet the prime minister is allowing this minister and her corrupt permanent secretary to stay on in their posts, giving them ample time to tamper with evidence and secure their employment futures through their executive influence. Therefore, we are in a situation where the Standards of Life Committee in parliament is turned into a bureaucratic procedure that delays the resignation of corrupt ministers while allowing the exacerbation of corruption during the waiting period until the committee is convened.
This is exactly the behaviour and illogical fallacy of a robot bureaucrat as I delineated in A Rent Seeker’s Paradise. For someone like Robert Abela, bureaucracy and its procedures are not there to serve the public, they are there to serve the bureaucrat and facilitate his work, dumbing it down in the process to the level of making it dispensable by a very simple algorithm. We have a prime minister who doesn’t make any decisions to the extent that he can be replaced by a simple algorithm.
