Jon Mallia has recently asked his fans on Facebook whether they would like him to interview Rosianne Cutajar. Many of them agreed with the idea and it is understandable that people would want to entertain themselves watching this shambles of a criminal making a fool of herself. However, this approach is totally wrong, and although I myself also may sometimes fall into the temptation of making entertainment out of this saga, the reality is that this is not funny at all.
By allowing Rosianne Cutajar to be interviewed and especially at length, she will be given the opportunity to build a narrative about her actions. She will be given a voice and her time will be used to justify her criminal acts. The thing is this. The basic concept of criminal punishment is to take away the freedom and rights of the criminal and this feature is essential for justice. If criminals are not stripped of their rights, then they can’t ever experience any punishment for their actions and the result would be impunity. Well, this is what is going on in Malta right now. Had we had a rule of law, Rosianne Cutajar would have been indicted over serious crimes of bribery and corruption and possibly even collusion with an alleged murderer, but instead, Rosianne Cutajar gets to wield her power by opening libel cases, making criminal complaints against her critics and even being invited to podcasts where she could speak at length. This is very wrong.
