No, speaking to the defense lawyer of the accused as magistrate is not “normal”

I don’t know if Magistrate Donatella Frendo Dimech got this custom by watching Hollywood films on law and order, but there is nowhere in our code of law which makes it anywhere near acceptable for the magistrate to negotiate or discuss the accused’s sentence with the defence lawyer prior to handing out the sentence. I could confirm from multiple sources that Magistrate Donatella Frendo Dimech has, not only been in contact with the Prime Ministerย but has in various cases actually discussed the sentence of the accused with the defence lawyer prior to handing out the sentence in various cases. The police are also aware of this, but since they have no evidence of corruption, there is no action that can be taken by them.

However, it doesn’t matter whether the Magistrates’ actions are illegal in this story, they are still unethical and very suspicious. It gets even more suspicious when you do these kinds of actions and your sentences on corruption and money laundering are consistently friendly to the accused. Donatella Frendo Dimech presided over the bribery case of the previous consultant to the Minister of Education, Evarist Bartolo, and the Magistrate is also presiding over the case of Florinda Sultana, the step-daughter of Darren Debono, who is accused of money laundering, yet despite having her assets frozen by the court, Florinda Sultana has been travelling to Dubai. Darren Deobono is also facing money laundering charges in Donatella Frendo Dimech’s court, and the Magistrate has recently been accused of having dined with Darren Debono himself.

None of this is normal: neither the constant reports of the Magistrate’s inappropriate behaviour, her communication with the Prime Minister, the serious accusations about her, and the very light-handed way by which she seems to be handling the cases of alleged corrupt and dangerous criminals.
