Clyde Caruana is saying that he will be introducing “high-powered AI” in the tax department. I laughed out loud when I read the news. It is the first time I have ever heard this description “high-powered AI”. What’s low-powered AI? Robert Abela’s brain?
Nowadays, “AI” has become a very popular buzzword and everyone wants to use it to look smart. I have long been a proponent of introducing automated software to replace government staff so this is good news, only that it is being presented with a sense of bombastic and infantile idiocy. I’m sure they are going to botch this up as they botched up everything else.
The tax department needs a proper re-organisation in administrative and human resources terms before starting the transition to move manual work done by humans to automated software. The department is incredibly inefficient and even dysfunctional at times, so introducing automated software without proper administrative reform is going to make things even worse.
