I am not privy to the investigation of Magistrate Gabriella Vella on the fraudulent public hospitals deal conducted by Joseph Muscat, Keith Schembri and Konrad Mizzi, however, it is obvious to assume, that any sensible and well-conducted investigation would request the arrest of those three. Joseph Muscat seems to be privy to the incoming result of the Magistrate’s investigation so he wants to have her removed from the case.
Eventually, Police Commissioner Angelo Gafa will have to arrest Joseph Muscat in response to the Magistrate’s investigation, and luckily for him, or so he thinks, will be able to excuse himself to Robert Abela, who has been pressuring him not to arrest Joseph Muscat, by saying that he can’t do otherwise other than following the Magistrate’s recommendations. What Police Commissioner Angelo Gafa can do next is to botch his prosecution against Joseph Muscat in court so as to allow him to get away scot-free. Meanwhile, Angelo Gafa has allowed Konrad Mizzi to exit the country despite the fact that Gafa knows very well that Konrad Mizzi is about to be referred for criminal arrest. Gafa is no longer trying to struggle to keep secret the fact that he is covering up for them with his inaction. He isn’t even struggling to seem to be making an effort. Gafa has given up on distorting the truth. The reality is that the police don’t need a magisterial inquiry to act and in fact, the police are supposed to conduct their own investigations separate from the Magistrate. The end result is that the police have nothing to show for it. The Head of the Financial Crimes Unit is another accomplice to this police cover-up by inaction.
I’m impressed. Why are they so stupid? Most especially, why and how is it possible that Robert Abela is so stupid? I’m still amazed at the outright recklessness and banal stupidity by which this imbecile became Prime Minister. Robert Abela made a deal with Joseph Muscat committing himself to keep him out of prison. How and why on earth is someone so stupid to make such a deal with someone who conducted the biggest frauds in Maltese political history?
There is a very stupid answer to this question and the answer is that Robert Abela and the Labour Party genuinely believed that they would remain in power forever – one of the greatest errors of judgment that has been made in Maltese politics. Genuinely, Robert Abela and those who have always supported him since his leadership bid, assumed that Labour will by default create a one-party State. Nowadays, the top=brass of the Labour Party are not convinced that they will remain in power forever so they are applying ever more authoritarian attitudes whilst seeking to consolidate their power in public institutions and by authoritarian laws.
Robert Abela has entered into a very dangerous deal with Joseph Muscat that will soon fall apart and expose him to blackmail from his previous master. Angelo Gafa will be remembered as just another police commissioner who obstructed justice to cover up for corrupt politicians.
I find it rather hard not to imagine Angelo Gafa sitting on the dock of a public inquiry explaining to future MPs why and how he covered up for Joseph Muscat and his corrupt friends. As for Robert Abela, there are witnesses and officials within the government who can attest to his clear and criminal obstruction of justice.
