Back in the 1980s it was mostly public sector custom and an unwritten rule that public sector employees had to join the General Workers’ Union and not other unions. I hope that today the situation is different.
This letter, however, that is being re-produced here does not bode well for free choice and it doesn’t make any sense anyway. Why would the senior management be involved in organising workers to join a trade union? I don’t even think that government regulations allow senior managers to join a trade union in the first place.
Of course, such a letter from the HR Department has a lot of weight especially when considering that the person signing, Mariette Borg is a well-known Labour Party member and also a previous employee at the Office of the Prime Minister. The General Workers’ Union is a pro-Labour and pro-government union.
