This is why you should not cheat or distort international sporting events

It is deeply unfortunate that the Maltese government is using the Games of the Small States of Europe as a local propaganda tool to boast about winning medals to local audiences. In its attempt to grab as many medals as possible, the Maltese government imported foreigners to compete under its flag. As a result, this convoluted the competition with Malta having an added advantage over other countries while at the same time, diminishing the successes of actual Maltese athletes who won medals.

International sporting events are not local propaganda opportunities, but an international show of clout and national power. By cheating and distorting the game, there is no glory and on the international stage, you will be touted as a fraud.
And by winning medals the way it did, the Maltese government damaged Malta’s reputation defeating the purpose of hosting the games in the first place.

Labour and its cock-ups. Same old story. Those who are comparing importing foreigners to represent one’s country to football clubs employing foreign players are missing the point entirely. Nowadays football clubs are business entities and they employ the best they can afford, local or foreign to earn a substantial share of TV rights. But, and here’s the crux, you don’t see a Spanish midfielder play for England do you? You won’t see Messi wearing the Italian blue dribble his way around opponents do you? If anything the Italian national team has a tendency of not even selecting players plying their trade outside Italy, bar one or two exceptions (Zola for example). What about when it comes to singing the national anthem? Were the imported winners actually caught on film singing the anthem (if this was at all a feature during medal ceremonies)?

    1. Thanks for this.
