While the country is in a constitutional crisis of the Prime Minister’s own making and the rule of law melts down by the hour, organised crime will take this opportunity to come out stronger. This is an opportunity for more impunity as institutions become more dysfunctional.
Darren Debono, Malta’s top oil smuggler and a subject in my book A Rent Seeker’s Paradise is going to get away with it because his case has been unusually sabotaged by the authorities. What was not mentioned in the Times article is that the main investigator in the case, James Turner was forced to resign from the case and police force altogether, and the Magistrate who is hearing the case in court has been accused of dining with the defendant himself. The Magistrate makes no secret of her inappropriate behaviour – she has been in contact with the Prime Minister himself over Whatsapp until the Prime Minister, idiotically enough, admitted to the press that he was in contact with a magistrate.
The Prime Minister would like us to believe that Magistrate Marsanne Farrugia, who is conducting the inquiry on the death of Jean-Paul Sofia is not fulfilling her duties, but the problems are often in places where Robert Abela doesn’t want you to look.
