The Abela family was bred and molded into corruption and rent-seeking. Compare their attitude to the Minister for Finances who doesn’t even have canvassers – so, basically, he doesn’t abuse the public system by extracting public funds to pay for full-time political canvassers. Sonia Abela is a full-time political canvasser for Alison Zerafa Civelli paid for by the general public. Obviously, Alison Zerafa who is a junior minister for local government, employed Sonia Abela because Sonia Abela can get votes with her ability to distribute favours to constituents. Despite the fact that the employment of canvassers as “customer care officers” within ministries is a normalised practice, it is highly irregular and probably illegal by various laws including the public administration act and the public finance management act. Sonia Abela’s employment is of course, explicitly illegal because she was also involved in a social benefits racket whilst in the same exact role as a customer care officer at the OPM. What makes these officers excel in their work is their propensity to distribute favors and win votes – a blatantly illegal act according to the Electoral Act.
