After Hamas conducted a barbaric and indiscriminate attack on Israeli civilians last Sunday, many prominent left-wingers celebrated the attacks saying it was an act of “decolonisation” or “freedom fighting”. These sentiments that justify the butchering and rape of Israeli civilians are driven by deeply rooted antisemitism which has been normalised in the left for many years. In Malta, we have leaders of the University of Malta like Dominic Fenech literally celebrating the death of Israelis by Hamas as an act of “decolonisation”.
Rivkah Brown has now retracted her previous statement and apologised for it. It’s good to see the late realisation of the inherent anti-semitism that haunts the left by someone who propagated it. The attacks on Israel have definitely brought more awareness about antisemitism. As for the Maltese left, I expect it to go through the same rude awakening, as with anything else, quite late and much after the left in the West has figured it out.
