As you may know, this is the sixth year after Daphne Caruana Galizia was murdered by a car bomb in her hometown Bidnija. I have already given a beautiful rendition of her work in my book A Rent Seeker’s Paradise, and after thinking about it, I would probably write the same thing if I had to do it again.
Daphne Caruana Galizia was Malta’s most popular author and journalist. She was deeply hated by the Labour Party for her independence and her journalism and gave us the stuff to talk about when the national broadcaster bored us to death with state propaganda. Six years after her death, her legacy is stronger than ever thanks to her family who run The Daphne Foundation which keeps renewing her memory. Daphne will forever be remembered in our history as one of Malta’s most important authors and writers. In terms of historical proportion, she is as big as Manwel Dimech – one of Malta’s first socialists and anti-imperialists. That’s quite a big place in Maltese history – bigger than most Prime Ministers and other politicians.
