The University of Malta has denied the allegations made by Professor Stelios Bekiros that it is embezzling EU funds and has claimed it will be taking “all necessary measures” to defend its reputation, whatever that means. However, by “all necessary measures” the University should have included the option of trying to resolve this dispute internally instead of allowing it to spill over court cases and official reports, but the University of Malta is not actually known for maturity, either.

I am writing in response to your blog post titled “Professor Stelios Bekiros sent a letter to the
Minister of Education alleging that the University of Malta is embezzling EU Funds,” published on
November 24, 2023, and the subsequent blog post, “The professor alleging that the University of
Malta has embezzled funds, has also filed a police report about threats against him by the
Universitys admin,” uploaded on November 26, 2023.
The University of Malta unequivocally refutes all assertions put forth by Professor Stelios Bekiros
pertaining to the alleged embezzlement of EU funds. The University maintains a longstanding and
reputable track record in the administration of EU funds, successfully overseeing a diverse range of
externally–funded projects over the years.
While adhering to our established policy of not disclosing individual case details, we can affirm that
internal proceedings are currently underway with regard to Professor Bekiros and he has been asked
not to be involved in any further project until such proceedings are concluded.
We reiterate that all claims made by Prof Bekiros are baseless and the University of Malta will be
taking all necessary measures to protect both its standing and that of its esteemed staff members.
