As part of its efforts to counter Saudi Arabia’s and Russia’s price war on oil, the US government announced in October that it would lift oil sanctions on Venezuela in exchange for a plan to hold democratic elections and release political prisoners. Nicolás Maduro not only failed to keep up his end of the bargain for failing to release any political prisoners, he is also now threatening to invade Guyana and annex most of its territory. Guyana is getting richer with recently discovered oil wells.
The US government is now threatening to pause its sanctions relief, but Maduro is going ahead with a referendum to basically, ask Venezuelans to vote on whether to go to war with Guyana and annex its large and oil-rich Esequibo region. Maduro says he won’t respect the decisions of the International Court of Justice, either. Brazil has also deployed the military in its northern border with Venezuela but no one is coming to Guayan’s aid.
That was fast. As soon as the Venezuela villain was given a bit of leeway, he began preparing for a war to conquer a smaller neighbour.
