Robert Abela’s posturing on Gaza is already reaching toxic levels making us look like idiots abroad

In what Robert Abela supposedly thought was a subtle and discrete reference, he accused the European Union of hypocrisy over its position on the war in Gaza compared to how it reacted about Ukraine.

There is no logic or hypocrisy in this argument, but it’s more of a populist untruth that can be appealing to his uneducated supporters. Why Ukraine and not Gaza?

There is no logic behind this. Ukraine is in Europe and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is a security threat to Europe and the world. The war in Gaza is not an international security threat: but Hamas is. These are just the fundamental principles and basics but I can go on forever, not to mention that Ukraine and Israel are basically both defending themselves from external attacks.

In addition, Israel and Gaza are not in Europe, so where is the hypocrisy? The European Union doesn’t focus as much as it does with foreign conflicts as it does on Palestine apart from donating up to ย€1 billion in funds to the Palestinian Authority every year. So, once again, where is the hypocrisy?

The European Union should promote and enforce the rule of law in foreign relations and abroad and that is what it is doing. Now, I do expect Robert Abela to be absolutely stupid and crassly opportunistic but this kind of stupid behaviour only alienates allies and potential foreign partners.

He’s an absolute embarrassment for the Maltese.
