Robert Abela is closing the year with a potential rebellion under his nose, a Labour Party that is hollow, in tatters, and speaks only his voice, and a government that is managing the country haphazardly, dysfunctionally, and crisis by crisis. There is a breakdown of communication between MPs as agitation increases with the anticipated Magisterial inquiry on Joseph Muscat’s fraudulent hospital deals. There’s a lot of posturing but in reality, cabinet members aren’t even able to coordinate their work with each other as the communication between them is breaking down, and the government system is further paralysed by dysfunction.
The man trying to hold all of this mess together is George Abela, who works daily from 10 am to 5 pm, at Castille, and spends the day meeting with cabinet ministers and bureaucrats in Valletta. The most senior consultant and trusted confidant of the Prime Minister, George Abela, his own father, governs the country while his princely son plays king in front of the cameras. It’s really, a sad arrangement of a dynasty that can’t do better: a family of narcissists who are playing with our lives.
George Abela always had ambitions to lead the country. Now that he has fulfilled his dream through his corrupt and criminal son, he is slowly coming to realise that governing the country is not a game. It’s not that the Abela dynasty is concerned about society or the country. They are concerned about themselves. Seeing the dwindling polls and the hubris left behind them, they, now have fear and doubts about their future. They thought they could go into politics, get richer, and come out winning as if governing the country was the same as scamming the government with a fraudulent consultancy contract with the Planning Authority. Now, with their cover-ups and criminal alliances, they are trapped in a criminal network they can not leave.
