We used to have Lou Bondi and Peppi Azzopardi, now we have Saviour Balzan. How do you like your change?

During the previous and consecutive Nationalist Party administrations, we used to have two household names that appeared on the public broadcaster regularly as journalists but doubled as PN propagandists. These were Peppi Azzopardi and Lou Bondi who together owned the Where’s Everybody company that the Labour Party used to accuse of having a monopoly over the public broadcaster and of pumping regular pro-PN propaganda. Alfred Sant even boycotted Where’s Everybody’s programmes for a long time and used to show utter contempt to Lou Bondi in public adding more to the drama. Then there was Saviour Balzan with a struggling media house who accused WE of the same things and even blamed them for unfair market competition.

Lou Bondi and Peppi Azzopardi never shied away from the fact they did “PR and consulting work” nor did they hide their political bias. Peppi Azzopardi even coached Jeffery Pullicino Orlando to in how to manage the Mistra scandal crisis with the media. Today, these two TV stars have been replaced by Saviour Balzan with the difference that Saviour Balzan is even more unprincipled, and mercenary and doesn’t even bring any money to the public broadcaster while Peppi Azzopardi used to make a profit with his programmes. Lou Bondi, eventually became a full-time PR and propagandist man working for the Labour government and the big Maltese names like the DB Group.

However, the truth is that Lou Bondi’s programmes were at least watchable. Saviour Balzan’s broadcasts sound like something coming from East Germany, while Peppi Azzopardi did actually invite opposition figures and government critics on his Friday night show. Under Labour, the situation only got worse.

I beg to differ – Lou Bondi and peppi Azzopardi were equally revolting.

  3. […] Lou Bondi is in the news lately, for a report and a speech he made for the President of Malta. He used to be a great journalist until Joseph Muscat and Keith Schembri bought his silence, and today, he works for the President. The Presidency has this campaign called “State of the Nation” and Lou Bondi is one of its consultants. The Presidency is fulfilling its role in providing direction and guidance to the State, however this should warrant a strong Leadership by the Presidency. […]

  4. […] Under the Nationalist administrations, we used to protest that the public broadcasting services was heavily biased towards the party-in-government, but back then and at least, PBS used to host actual journalistic shows such as Bondi+. […]
