Franco Debono is currently making a push for PN Leader and many Nationalists are highly concerned about this prospect, and you can’t blame them. Franco Debono is one of Malta’s top criminal lawyers and he stands for nothing other than his personal ambitions. He is unprincipled and amoral and he is trying to send the message that the PN should drop its struggle for the rule of law in exchange for total tolerance to criminality and corruption, simply so that it could win the elections. This is irresponsible to the highest degree possible. Franco Debono, basically wants PN to turn into another Labour Party.
Manuel Delia has compared Franco Debono to a tumor and several PN election candidates like Miriana Testaferrata de Noto and PN MP Alex Borg came out attacking Manuel Delia for his remarks. I would suggest to these amateur politicians to dedicate their time to fighting Labour instead of fighting one of their own. They are deliberately taking a page from Labour’s book by attacking a journalist hoping that it would give them the same kind of sympathy that Labour garners when it accuses journalists of “cruelty”. I see this as a very worrying development where it is becoming ever more acceptable to attack journalists and writers and blame our country’s problems on them. These PN MPs should be ashamed of themselves. They are not impressing us by trying to paint themselves as virtue signalers of correct discourse: they are only showing how deeply warped their mentalities have become.
Manuel Delia doesn’t hate Franco Debono. Neither do I. Franco Debono and I shared greetings this week when we bumped into each other in court and we would probably hit it off discussing the philosophy of law. Franco Debono is a likable character despite his narcissism and egocentrism. On the other hand, as the leader of the Nationalist Party, he will throw the country to the dogs and allow even more rampant corruption and criminality. The metaphor of the “tumor” is correct. Franco Debono represents an ever-growing class of unprincipled politicians (many of them criminal lawyers) whose interests are more aligned with Malta’s criminal groups than the needs and interests of the nation. Just like a tumor, this corrupt and amoral political culture needs to be stopped.
Franco Debono should be opposed and PN would be making a grave error of judgment allowing him back in. He’s making his intentions and ambitions very clear and they are absolutely not aligned with the national interest.
In addition, I will say this to the amateur PN candidates who are attacking Manuel Delia – you stand very little as a Nationalist next to Manuel Delia. Hate him or love him, Manuel Delia jumped into the fire for the Nationalist Party in its most critical times and he sacrificed his career for the Party. You can disagree with him as much as you like and I used to be in the streets protesting against him and his political master back during the GonziPN era, but I find it ridiculous that these young amateurs who have absolutely zero legacy in PN think that they can garner respect by attacking one of their veterans.
Would you like respect? Then become hated by the Labourites as much as Manuel Delia is hated, then you have my attention.
