Robert Abela would have preferred to lead the Labour Party without Joseph Muscat in his way. Their relationship is very unstable despite their public displays of theatrical love and support. Robert Abela is a psychopathic narcissist who has no friends and the crooks who stick around him do so for their profitable ends – they would (and will) sell him as soon as circumstances compell them to. There is an obvious reason why Robert Abela is going to self-destructive efforts to uphold his deal with Joseph Muscat and cover up for him.
Robert Abela couldn’t care less about what happened to Joseph Muscat. Robert Abela is also very stupid, but he is also criminally clever and has a sense of self-preservation. Robert Abela would not rope in Joseph Muscat back into the Labour Party just because he fears he may be losing the election. Robert Abela is aware of the obvious fact that Joseph Muscat will be arrested for his public hospitals fraud, and he understands that such an arrest would damage him and the party. So, why is Robert Abela going into such trouble for Joseph Muscat?
The answer is obvious, but some specifics are important. Robert Abela does not understand the language of politics and diplomacy. He doesn’t mediate and is incapable of holding a discussion. As a narcissistic psychopath, Robert Abela is only capable of delivering monologues, insulting people, banging on the table, and behaving like a tinpot Saddam Hussein. Similar to a Russian Tsarist cabal, Robert Abela only comprehends the language of power, and he can only change his position when confronted with force. Robert Abela is only moved by being strong-armed, and in reality, he can be strong-armed very easily.
Robert Abela doesn’t need absolute control over the Police and the Office of the Attorney General to protect Joseph Muscat: he needs to protect himself and this is the price he is paying for his ambition to rule the country. In reality, Robert Abela didn’t have a lot of good options when Joseph Muscat asked him to protect him just as he was being forced to resign as Premier. And Joseph Muscat played Robert Abela really well, exactly like a useful tool would be played: pitiful fool. Robert Abela is basically, blackmailed and several people close to him, including Joseph Muscat know things about him that in front-page headlines, may look even darker than political corruption. Robert Abela has an extensive criminal history of money laundering of drug profits, and having used his wife as a regular front for his money-laundering activities, Robert Abela may have risked not just his political career, and freedom, but also his family’s peace. Robert Abela knows that Joseph Muscat knows these things about him, and Robert Abela has to go along with whatever Joseph Muscat asks of him – such as a diplomatic passport, a free office, and even his own publicly paid staff. Most importantly, Joseph Muscat needs to stay out of prison and Robert Abela is working hard on this.
Joseph Muscat has been in regular contact with Robert Abela ever since they made their Devil’s pact before Joseph Muscat resigned as Prime Minister following which, Muscat used his resources and contacts to help Robert Abela get elected Party leader. Muscat even directly advised Robert Abela what to say and what to do throughout the Labour leadership race and they have a very extensive Whatsapp messaging history between them. They harbour deep contempt for each other, yet they are compelled to use each other for their criminal ends. Ultimately, both of them reciprocate this mutually beneficial relationship by covering for each other and ensuring they both stay out of prison. These are textbook dynamics of a criminal organisation, not of a political party in the EU.
