As the Labour Party is getting completely taken over by the criminal networks of Robert Abela and Joseph Muscat, top Party activists who previously used to be very active with Party activity and political work, have mostly abandoned their activism. Those who were more opportunistic like Daniel Micallef, took opportunity of the renewed corruption and rent-seeking to exclusively use these times and events as a means to enrich themselves, whilst abandoning altogether all the work they previously used to do for the Labour Party.
A noteworthy individual who has abandoned all his political activity to focus on business, mostly provided through Party contacts is Daniel Micallef, the deputy leader of the Labour Party. You can read this extensive investigation by Julian Delia here on a project by Labour Party donors with Daniel Micallef as their architect that will replace the last green lung of a Labour-leaning locality with a massive apartment complex. The choice of Santa Lu?ija for the project is quite deliberate. Given that it is a traditional Labour locality in the South, Daniel Micallef and his friends assumed they wouldn’t encounter much opposition to this project and could process their planning application without much controversy. The result is not what they originally intended and many Labour Party members and supporters are flustered at the way the Party is rolling over them with no consideration for them and their locality whatsoever.
As of recent months, Daniel Micallef was rarely seen at the regular meetings he used to attend at the CNL, apart from stopping altogether to attend the parliamentary group meetings and missing meetings with the executive. Previously, he used to tour the localities and the local committees but even these party organs are decaying and Daniel Micallef is nowhere to be seen. On Joseph Muscat’s return, Daniel Micallef is taking a passive and complacent stance, but this is also part of his overall attitude that he increasingly adopted during Robert Abela’s premiership: that is to lay low, do nothing, and focus on expanding his business thanks to his government Party contacts. Daniel Micallef is involved in several major government projects including the new open space in San ?wann and a social housing project in Cospicua, apart from many other public contracts.
Daniel Micallef is supposed to be taking care of Labour Party internal affairs, but the only ones micromanaging internal party affairs are Robert Abela and Joseph Muscat’s associates while Daniel Micallef is busy playing fiddle.
