Judge Joanne Vella Cuschieri slams the only public entity investigating financial crime

The only independent institution that has the capability of investigating financial crime in Mallta is the FIAU. The MFSA is hijacked by political appointees and the Police have no skills, staff and resources to conduct financial investigations. The FIAU is the only entity that can investigate crimes such as political corruption, money laundering, bribery, and more.

Today, the FIAU was slammed by Judge Joanne Vella Cuschieri in what seems to be a very bizarre sentence and a direct attack on the entity itself. The judge has even called for the disbandment of the FIAU and the creation of an independent entity which is even more bizarre. I will be taking a deep look at the sentence later on, but in the meantime enjoy this clip of the Judge exalting her masters at the ?entru Nazzjonali Laburista (this was before she was appointed to the judiciary).

    However, I do agree that the FIAU’s method of inflicting fines is dictatorial. I do not agree that all MFSA officials are political appointees…it is an insult to the hard working employees. Let us not generalise and take things to the extreme.

    The FIAU comes down like a tonne of bricks on ordinary financial services operators to appear to be doing its duty and compensate for turning a Nelson?s eye, or both eyes, for ML committed by the regime?s criminals-turned-politicians.
