Like Viktor Orban, Robert Abela wants to adopt a pro-Russia foreign policy

Last Sunday, Robert Abela did the unthinkable and came out against Europe’s defence industries, accused Roberta Metsola of warmongering, and pledged not to support an increase in defence spending. As Russia expands its occupation in Ukraine and makes plans for further attacks in Europe, both directly and by proxy, the anti-defence posture by European politicians is exactly what the Kremlin wants.

The Kremlin wants Europeans to be against defending and arming their states so that it can expand its hegemony eastward into our European borders. The Kremlin also wants Europe vulnerable and politically unstable – it also wants Europeans to refuse to make sacrifices to defend Europe’s sovereignty and democracy.ย  The underlying propaganda narrative by the Kremlin is that Europe is a warmonger and should stop spending on defence and security because doing so is impoverishing Europeans – this is a lie. Defence spending actually creates jobs and Russia’s interests are to have a free hand in controlling and influencing European politics, to murder its adversaries in Europe with impunity, and essentially expand its borders into Europe.

Russia is at war with Europe, whether you like it or not. The only reason why Russia doesn’t attack NATO is because NATO can defend itself. Being against Europe’s defence industries right now, at this moment, when Russia is planning to make further attacks in Europe, is basically and essentially a pro-Russian position. There is no ambiguity in this.

The other underlying propaganda message by the Kremlin is that Russia is at war because Europe is arming itself. This is also basically what Robert Abela is projecting. According to the Kremlin, if we are to stop arming ourselves and allow Russia to destroy the Ukrainian nation and take some of its land, Russia will be pacified. This immoral, stupid and delusional narrative that can’t be any further away from the truth. Russia is not fighting a war because there is a genuine dispute between Russia and the West – Russia is fighting a war because the Kremlin is a criminal dictatorship with an imperialist foreign policy. Anyone who says otherwise is either totally stupid or a pro-Russian agent – Robert Abela is both (Robert Abela even serviced Russian oligarchs before becoming Prime Minister).

Robert Abela, basically gave away our foreign policy to Russia for free. Had Mintoff done the same, he would have at least asked for a yearly payment for this foreign policy position, but Robert Abela just went on and conjured up this policy with his propagandist, Aleander Balzan for an impulsive and cheap political stunt, compromising our national security in the process. The Russian attaches at the Russian embassy in Malta have undoubtedly sent very positive reports to Moscow on Robert Abela’s speech. There has never been in our history a Prime Minister so reckless and irresponsible with our national security and foreign policy.

Russia is currently conducting a very sophisticated covert propaganda and political war against its adversaries in the West. Among the tactics the Russians are using in Europe and the US to stir up anti-Western sentiment are deliberate provocations, propaganda and disinformation, and funding for politicians who can deliberately damage European states. As Robert Abela takes a pro-Russian position on defence and security, we can never be sure whether the Maltese Security Services are protecting the national security from external Russian influence. On the contrary. With a security service that serves as a political branch for the Office of the Prime Minister, there is an even higher probability that our security services are allowing the Russian services in Malta to operate with impunity. We are truly in a very desperate situation in this regard.

Not only is our government run as part of an organised criminal network, but now we are also faced with the problem that in a geopolitical scenario of heightened security and defence risks, the Prime Minister himself is throwing away our security and defences in the dustbin so that he can pick up a cheap political dispute with Roberta Metsola. This is insanity at best, at worst, this is criminal treason of the worst kind we have seen in our history.

As explained already, both major political parties had until last Sunday preserved some trust with each other in matters of national security: this trust has been broken. The Labour Party will never be trusted again with matters of national security when it gets back in the Opposition benches. Robert Abela has turned the Labour Party into a rogue entity that is even compromising our national security.
