It’s truly remarkable that a sitting Member of Parliament is being accused of being involved in a hold-up, and no one from the authorities bats an eyelid. Newly promoted Superintendent, Fleri Soler was supposed to investigate Carmelo Abela over his alleged involvement but nothing came out of the investigation, so today, we can only contend with Carmelo Abela’s denials.
In another well-functioning democracy, someone from the authorities, either from the Office of the Attorney-General or the Police, would have given some explanations about this case because this is in the public interest. The public deserves the right to know whether an investigation has been conducted on Carmelo Abela, to what extent, and whether he is in the clear or not. This is not a game of mystery or chance. Carmelo Abela is not an ordinary citizen and the citizens have the right to know on his status. Angelo Gafa runs the Police like a criminal enterprise, thinking he has the right to create crises in the country with a total disregard to the rule of law, democracy, and civil society.
