The Degiorgio brothers are, of course, untrustworthy and bloodthirsty criminals. They are psychotic monsters who, just like in killing someone else to conduct their business, may very well lie to accomplish their aims. So, of course, one should listen to what they say with great suspicion and skepticism.
The problem, however, regarding their allegation that the current Labour MP, Carmelo Abela, abetted them in their infamous HSBC bank heist in Qormi, is that Carmelo Abela was actually investigated by the police over his involvement in this heist. What’s also strange, is that Carmelo Abela’s involvement in the HSBC heist was known by the police well before the Degiorgio brothers had made their allegations public. Assistant Commissioner Fabian Fleri, now at the FCID, was also entrusted to investigate Carmelo Abelza over the heist.
The evidence that the police had linked to Carmelo Abela basically consisted of two objects. First, a security card was given to the robbers so that they could access the room where the money was located in the bank. Additionally, there was a video recording of the inside of the building, which was taken by Carmelo Abela’s phone and sent to the robbers themselves. Carmelo Abela is also suspected of providing information to the robbers on the Balzan robbery, mainly by informing them of the date when the large volume of money was to be stored.
Then there are other aspects that should be taken into consideration. The HSBC’s security department also shares the suspicion that Carmel Abela abetted the robbers, and in fact, on their own recommendation, HSBC never re-hired Carmelo Abela after he lost his Ministry and went back as a back-bencher. Of course. HSBC would never admit this. As of today, Carmelo Abela remains unemployable unless hired by the government.
Today, we remain without any answers. For example, why wasn’t Carmelo Abela arraigned in court, and what happened to the investigation of him and the evidence that the police had collected? Fabian Fleri never shied away from the camera and the press, and he even appeared on ONE once to boast of the Police’s success. Equally, he should be able to boast of fighting gangsters, including those who sit in Parliament.
