As the Labour propagandists are out singing the praises for the Labour Ministers entrusted with following through the recommendations of the public inquiry of Jean-Paul Sofia, we should keep in mind the Nationalist Party’s statement that Labour is not genuinely interested in changing things. Ultimately, the biggest insult of Labour’s reaction is appointing Silvio Schembi, the Minister for the Economy, to implement the reforms recommended by the public inquiry when in actual fact, his ministry was primarily responsible for granting public land to Labour Party contractors that are now being accused of manslaughter and killing Jean Paul Sofia.
Matthew Schembri, the business partner of Kurt Buhagiar who was granted the lease of public land by INDIS along with Malta Enterprise, is the nephew of George Muscat, the previous chairman of GAP Holdings. GAP Holdings is a donor and sponsor of Silvio Schembri. Paul Attard of GAP Holdings (the same Paul Attard mentioned in the Shift article) is the brother of Joe Attard, who was the CEO of INDIS from July 2021 to January 2023. Joe Attard was not involved in the transfer of public land to Matthew Schembri and Kurt Buhagiar, but his appointment given his connections with the Minister would have raised immediate ethical concerns. Not under Labour.
Silvio Schembri, Byron Camilleri, and Jonathan Attard all have one common and very important priority in their follow-up of the public inquiry. They all need and will ensure that whatever happens doesn’t damage the Labour Party or its reputation and this is the same reason why people like Joe Attard are appointed to strategic positions: to keep secrets from the public and ensure impunity for the Labour Party associates.
