As a Christian at heart, I believe that most people deserve a second chance at life. Arab Omar Elaref had that second chance and was privileged with great trust by people in finance. After having stabbed someone as a late teenager, Arab Omar Elaref worked in finance and became the Vice-Mayor of Pembroke. He also enjoys a friendship and acquaintance with Dear Leader, Robert Abela.
Arab Omar was employed by Red Acre until he was let go for improper conduct. At the same time, he was developing a drug addiction, mainly to cocaine. Yet, he was given a second chance again and a group of businesspeople in finance gave him some work and entrusted him with a budget to fulfill some duties. This work included servicing derivatives and crypto brokerage exchanges with operational services.
This was a great privilege to have and Omar set up his operation in a villa in the south of Malta, subcontracting other individuals to help him out with the business. He subcontracted several technical people and entrusted them with his clients’ funds and wallets to have an ongoing operation. So far, there is nothing wrong in this story, and there are many similar setups like this in Malta.
However, Omar, never let go of his drug addiction and preferred to indulge in fraud and extensive misappropriation of funds from his clients to fund his cocaine addiction, deliberately and blatantly, breaking the trust of his clients. His clients, having discovered they had been robbed decided to keep the subcontracted individuals in order to preserve their operation while letting Omar go.
Even at this point, the story may not have been particularly interesting, given that the private parties decided to resolve it accordingly. Yet, Omar decided to file a vexatious police report declaring that his funds were misappropriated by his subcontractors, and the police have even arrested them in preparation for their arraignment in court. Eventually, this story developed into one of these common occurrences where crime does not only pay, but is also abetted and supported by the state itself.
I’m perplexed how and why the Cyber Crimes Unit has rushed through this investigation, making arrests promptly. Then again, it’s also the usual story of a Police Force that is easily prompted by Labour Party politicians, yet totally castrated when it comes to organised crime. It’s even worse when the Labour Party politicians themselves are criminals themselves. I’ve been in a similar situation when Rosianne Cutajar took me to court and lost.
