Earlier this week, the Czech authorities dismantled a Russian media entity that was bribing European politicians to take pro-Russian stands. Malta was not mentioned in the list of countries where politicians received Russian funds, but Robert Abela and the Labour Party have been strongly echoing Russian talking points on European defense as part of the European Parliament election campaign, which have been made repeatedly by pro-Russian voices and propagandists.
When Robert Abela was still a cabinet advisor to Joseph Muscat and practiced as a lawyer, Abela provided services to Russian oligarchs who wanted to buy Maltese passports, and among one of his clients was Evgeny Filobokov, who also (and supposedly) rented his villa in ?ejtun, and wired up to ย166,832 to Willerby Trade Inc, an offshore company directed by the corrupt accountant of the Joseph Muscat cabal, Brian Tonna.
One of the Labour Party MEP candidates who has been taking a strong position against European defense is Clint Flores, who also accused European leaders of “nazism”. Malta has been used as a base by Putin’s associates to establish their presence in Europe,ย and was also forced to shut down its passport sales to Russians and Belarusians after Russia invaded Ukraine, despite the government opposing this move. Consistently, the Labour government has steered its foreign policy in favour of Moscow’s interests and against collective European security interests.
As things stand, Moscow doesn’t need to bribe Robert Abela and the Labour Party because they are already compromised. However, conducting a very extensive and detailed investigation of all the politically exposed persons (PEPs) who helped Russians obtain Maltese passports would be in our national and security interest.
