It does not surprise me that those who cheered at the arraignment of the Labour MP and doctor Silvio Grixti for the social benefits racket are not going after the politicians who actually enabled and facilitated the fraudulent applications. Even those who facilitated the racket from the Office of the Prime Minister have been spared, while Silvio Grixti is being forced to take responsibility of the racket all by himself and his associates.
Roger Agius is one of those arraigned in court for the case and has made several damning allegations, some of which of which have already been proven in court. Roger Agius has claimed that political interference, namely by Mark Calleja (Il-Gulija) who administered the racket, lead to the changes to decisions made to applications for social benefits. He also claims that Ministry of Social Policy, led by Minister Michael Falzon has facilitated the fraudulent applications of up to 400-500 applications totaling 10 million in social benefits. Mark Calleja is one of Michael Falzon’s political appointees and also his canvasser.
So, impunity for Labour Party politicians has gone as far as to the fact that they are protected even when a corruption case that involves them directly is ongoing in court, but only its perpetrators are arraigned. Similar to the Pilatus Bank case where the only one arraigned was the Chief Risk Officer but not the subjects actually doing and committing the money-laundering.
Police Commissioner Angelo Gafa has perfected a very typical form of criminal justice also widely implemented in dictatorships where the executors of corrupt acts are indicted in court, while the Ministers who ordered the corrupt schemes watch from the comfort and security of their government and parliamentary privilege.
