I find it incredibly ironic that Robert Abela’s fall as he drags down the Labour Party with him, is not primarily emanating from his corrupt past and money-laundering activities, but instead from creating a new constitutional and political crisis simply to defend a man who will inevitably go to prison.
Yesterday’s press conference, with Supreme Leader standing as he was flanked with what looked like a servile-boy-scout Justice Minister, has projected the Labour Party for the criminal organisation that it is. Throughout this press conference, never once did Robert Abela make a remark of support to the Judiciary, to the Police, to the Prosecutor. Never once did he show a sign of loyalty to the Maltese State. Instead, he spent the press conference smearing Magistrate Gabriella Vella, denouncing her inquiry as a political tool, and at one point even accused a journalist for working for the Establishment. He projected himself as the adjudicator of the judiciary and compromised the authority of the courts by stating that the court should be judged at the ballot box.
Following his gross and crass behavior following the conclusion of the Magisterial Inquiry on Jean Paul Sofia’s death, Robert Abela should have learned his lesson not to try and distort the rule of law to Labour’s advantage. He learned nothing. Twice bitten once shy, one would say, and following Jean-Paul Sofia’s saga, now the Labour Party has lost any chance it had to redeem itself and its history because it has consistently came out against the Justice system when this Justice system actually delivered conclusions and results that would have been ideologically and politically greatly embraced by any well-meaning and decent social-democratic party.
Imagine the daily street protests that Labour would have organised if it was in Opposition and a Magisterial inquiry indicted Nationalist politicians over a corrupt a privatisation deal of our national health service. Incredible.
Robert Abela is not only destroying the Labour Party’s electoral prowess and integrity, he is destroying on a permanent basis the Labour Party’s soul, consuming it like a criminal he is in a chaotic manner, randomly and in moments of sheer idiocy. If the cabinet doesn’t stop him, they will be regretting these days when in the future, an alternative government would remind them of their supposed socialist credentials.
