Jason Azzopardi and Robert Aquilina, the two Repubblika lawyers who have drafted and submitted the official request for a magisterial inquiry into the government’s deals with Vitals and Steward, have regularly been targets of threats due to their work. Robert Aquilina was even assaulted in public apart from experiencing an attempted break-in at his home.
For some strange reason the Police have been very reluctant in providing security to Robert Aquilin and Jason Azzopardi. What’s stranger is that both Azzopardi and Aquilina had police protection before a specialised unit was created to protect journalists was created and removed third protection from them. This unit was created upon the conclusion of the public inquiry into the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia.
Today, Robert Aquilina enjoys a part-time police security, while in contrast Jason Azzopardi was refused security. The Inquiring Magistrate Gabriella Vella was provided with police security following the submission of her public inquiry into the Vitals and Steward Deals.
