Both the current Nationalist Party Leader Bernard Grech and previous leader Adrian Delia were present at Thursday’s national protest organised by Repubblika and other NGOs. Their presence coincided with other Nationalist Party MPs and prominent faces. I’m currently arguing there is a disunited opposition in the country and PN is heading to the polls by itself without trying to forge alliances with the rest of society.
The fact that Bernard Grech and Adrian Delia were present at the protest doesn’t put a dent in my argument. Attending is the minimum they can do, but there is still lacking between Bernard Grech, Repubblika and many other NGOs coordination for political objectives and this lack of coordination is very apparent.
This situation also reminds me of the 2019 crisis when the national protests were led by civil society and not the PN and as a consequence, PN was not mounting an effective challenge to the government. This is an anomaly and not something to be cherished by PN. At that time, the only direct challenge to power that Joseph Muscat faced was not PN, but the Labour Party rebels led by Chris Fearne.
During every national crisis that comes up, PN is consistently failing to project itself as an immediate alternative to power. This is wrong and we should talk about it.
