The campaign of European Parliament President Roberta Metsola for the European Parliament was excellent and provides for the ideal and textbook strategy against the Labour Party in an election campaign. The Nationalist Party should adopt Roberta Metsola’s way while adapting an increasingly more combative stance.
Basically, Roberta Metsola didn’t engage with the candidates of the Labour Party during this campaign but engaged in various debates with other candidates during events hosted by the Chamber of Commerce and other entities. This was the right strategy because had Roberta Metsola engaged with the Labour Party candidates, she would have lowered herself by having to counter untruths, lies and literally criminal propaganda, much of it funded and disseminated by public funds. The Labour Party has conducted a horrible smear and defamation campaign against Roberta Metsola imbued with blood libel and outright lies that intentionally attacked her international position and compromise her standing and security. She did the right thing to dissociate herself from all that and instead, conduct her campaign on her own terms.
Then there was the aspect of the Labour Party candidates, which is basically the worse-line-up the Labour Party has ever fielded for the European parliament elections with all of them defending the Labour Party’s criminal record in government or Joseph Muscat himself. Imagine the President of the European Parliament having to discuss some state-funded weirdo or Alex Agius Saliba blabbering about “Establishment” and whatnot in defense of the most corrupt Prime Minister in history as he is charged in court with money-laundering, fraud and bribery. Roberta Metsola opted to avoid all of this.
People in general are no longer stupid, and understand narratives and lies. Roberta Metsola is going to achieve the best result in this election without having had to make any effort to counter the dirty tricks of the Labour Party. Chapeau to her.
