With apologies to Nassim Taleb, but notice the incredible plot twist with Alex Agius Saliba’s relationship with the leader of the Labour Party.
For as long as I can remember, going back at least twenty years or more, Alex Agius Saliba has based his work, activism, and progression within the Labour Party’s ranks by serving it in the most loyal manner. His uncritical and blind loyalty, combined with his inability to think critically, earned him the trust of successive Labour Party leaders who supported and advanced his political career: Forum ?g?a?ag? Laburisti, ONE and eventually MEP.
His blind loyalty was used and abused against him by Joseph Muscat’s criminal network and now, Alex Agius Saliba seems to be more loyal to Joseph Muscat than to Robert Abela himself. Alex it-Tander as we know him has been able to conduct this act of outright defiance towards the leader over some sense of personal nostalgia to how he was treated by Joseph Muscat. He can’t do the right thing and abandon Joseph Muscat altogether, because you see, Alex Agius Saliba loves Joseph Muscat over Robert Abela because he made the politician he is today.
Joseph Muscat loved playing with people and using them in a patronising manner. The problem is that ever since we were young political activists, we used to mock Alex Agius Saliba for his blind Party loyalty. Even the most dedicated and loyal Party activists of my generation used to mock Alex Agius Saiba for this: he was that uncritical and blind. Alex may have done this specifically with a personal and opportunistic agenda.
Joseph Muscat was probably the first in the Labour Party who made Alex Agius Saliba feel more valued and special other than his loyalty. So, Alex Agius Saliba has personal, misguided and insidious intentions behind his actions and defiance to Robert Abela. He’s not some sort of working-class hero defending the people. He’s a champagne socialist who is comfortably enjoying a good salary while exploiting the darkest elements and spirit of the Labour Party to his advantage. Like Joseph Muscat he is afflicted with another deranged Anakin Skywalker syndrome and he’s out for a revenge which is very personal.
I’d say that the Labour Party should stop him before he becomes dangerous and a serious national security threat. He no longer feels the same about the Labour Party as he used to. Now, that he has garnered enough power and influence by himself over the Labour Party’s electorate, always thanks to Joseph Muscat, Alex Agius Saliba feels entitled to take diametrically opposed positions to the Labour Party leader himself. What’s stopping from becoming a Russian or Chinese tool with this attitude?
Had Alex Agius Saliba prioritised the Party’s interest first and foremost, he would have avoided campaigning for the European Parliament elections with Joseph Muscat. Yet, he even roped in Rosianne Cutajar to ensure that his message of aligning with Joseph Muscat’s faction is loud and clear. He does not want to hide the fact that he wants to build and project a Labour Party that is very distinct and different from what Robert Abela has tried to project: a united Party yet distant with Joseph Muscat and his faction. Alex Agius Saliba’s version is one which accepts Joseph Muscat and his faction entirely back into the Labour Party.
It’s incredible that the same Labour Party delegates who used to think and suspect that it was I who would take up an existential and vidnictive war against the Labour Party are now discussing the grave and existential threachery of their most loyal servant.
