If things are bad, they could definitely get much worse

When things are getting bad, it doesn’t mean they will start getting better soon. It also means they could get much worse.

We, Europeans, especially small states, have lived through relative comfort, safety and security with the world’s only Superpower under the stewardship of the Democrats. We may very well lose this security and comfort.

Interesting times may very well have a big comeback with the ascension of Donald Trump to the Presidency, and by interesting times, I mean volatility, uncertainty, instability and potentially chaos.

I’m an optimistic Fukuyamist in the sense that on a long term historical basis, humanity will always figure it out with a moderately balanced solution. This does not mean that history is linear or that time and history will directly and necessarily cause progression.  It means that from the chaos that ensues in history, the probability is that, according to historical evidence of times past, humanity will most probably figure out positive solutions that are beneficial to most people.

On a real-time basis, interesting times requires adults in the room who are able to manage the ongoing crises and challenges. Malta is going through more interesting times with an amateurish and criminal government that can’t even sort out its rule of law problems, let alone face the incoming challenges of history. Malta has taken on record amounts of debt to address the crisis caused by the Covid-pandemic and the Russian war on Ukraine. Malta can’t afford to the same thing in another crisis, and the risk of new and even bigger crises than the Covid-pandemic and the Russian war in Ukraine are now greater in probability.

So, this is why governing a country should never be a personal and opportunistic adventure of a couple of kids playing power. We may lose the relative comfort of having had a Democrat US Presidency that cares and is concerned for the security of Europe. As we risk losing it, Malta will be more vulnerable like other EU-member states to security and intelligence vulnerabilities.

Getting serious about our politics is not a privilege, it is a perequisite for survival. Those who keep making political theatre out of serious national and strategic issues should be shamed and discarded altogether from politics. The urgency to have a normal government led by adults has never been greater.

  1. Trump ~ the pussy grabber ~ will never ever again gain presidency. No chance.
The world is the way it is because men & women – mostly men – have a low emotional intelligence quotient, a big ego and a serious lack of emotional maturity.
The current state of the world is the lesson all of us – especially crass, criminal bullies – are in the process of learning. The longer we take to mature as a society, as a nation and as a global community, the harder things will get.
