Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is protesting against the European Union’s Council selection of the top posts saying that the conservatives have been unfairly underrepresented. This is false.
The “conservatives” that Giorgia Meloni is referring to are the far-right parties called the European Conservatives and Reformists and Identity and Democracy. These groups have together garnered a total of 141 seats. These two political groups differ fundamentally on major issues including Ukraine, the Euro, climate change and migration, with the other four major parties which are the European People’s Party (centre-right), the S&D (centre-left), Renew Europe (liberals) and the Greens who together have garnered 453 seats.
The European Conservatives and Reformists and Identity and Democracy have many members who are pro-Russia and are also “Eurosceptics” in political ideology, and it is basically impossible to govern with them, apart from the serious security risks that come with prospect of the far-right having any executive power.
