Yesterday, Robert Abela gave a propagandist speech on ONE where he said nothing new and as he did this, kept digging himself further into his bottomless pit. He lied about the situation in the Party and Chris Fearne and everything else he spoke about.
There are more realities and facts that I am still learning about as I research my story on the fantasies of the Labour Party parliamentary group about overthrowing their Supreme Leader. They do have the numbers to make their dream come true, but Chris Fearne, the one whom Labour MPs are hoping and betting will have the moral authority to present a vote of confidence in the Prime Minister, is waiting for the result of his court case at the end of the month before making any moves. At the end of the month, the court will decide whether to presume Chris Fearne guilty or innocent on a prima facie basis.
From an objective standpoint as an investigator, I don’t have high hopes the Court will throw out Chris Fearne’s case so easily. From a political standpoint, Chris Fearne is being vindicated. Not only is there evidence that he was undermined by a smear campaign, but there’s also evidence that he resisted Konrad Mizzi’s and Steward’s constant demands and pressure to increase payments.
Meanwhile, Robert Abela is losing more support within the Party as he keeps delaying any moves to create meaningful change in the government and the Labour Party. The reappointment of Angelo Gafa as Police Commissioner was Robert Abela’s definite signal that on the most crucial problem that is degrading the Party and the nation, that is the rule of law, nothing will change. Instead of solving the divisive problem in the Labour Party by cutting off its criminal elements, Robert Abela wants and expects to preserve all of them simultaneously as he attempts to normalise the situation.
Robert Abela prefers Chris Fearne to resign as Deputy Party Leader altogether so that he can appoint his own loyalist to the role. Chris Fearne is resisting this suggestion, and Robert Abela does not have the power to force Chris Fearne to resign. The back-to-back statements issued by the Labour Party parliamentary group were also an indirect challenge to Robert Abela in support of Chris Fearne.
At this stage, Robert Abela has lost all control over the Labour Party and the only meaningful control he has left lies with the government. If Robert Abela tries to impose his leadership on his Labour Party MPs with his power of incumbency as they stay silent in fear, things will get worse exponentially faster. Eventully, someone’s patience will run out and the tumult will start. Robert Abela so far is trying to avoid any conflagration by acting as if nothing has happened and business is as usual: most of the others are plotting against him.
