Unconfirmed reports that Xi Jinping’s health is in bad condition as the CCP’s Third Plenary Session is underway

Yesterday, Chinese journalist Jennifer Zeng published an unconfirmed news report that China’s President Xi Jinping has had a stroke during the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China’s Third Plenary Session.

The rumours were further fueled today as the CCP enforced a communication blackout on the high-level meeting. The Central Committee of the CCP is its highest organ and meets around seven times a year to take major decisions. The meeting is usually preceded and followed with a lot of party propaganda.

This is not the first time that rumors spread that Xi Jinping has had a stroke, especially with the circulation of last year’s video of him wobbling as he descended a plane.

I just watched the whole video and did not see any signs of wobbliness. Just an old man walking down a flight of stairs. Admittedly, not as light as a 13-year-old, but who is, apart from 13-year olds? Xi Jinping is, to my knowledge, ascetic these days, so his health could improve in years to come (before it deteriorates). Dissidents and politicians around him die, but not himself.

Not saying the stroke rumours are not true, but we have been hearing about Vladimir Putin’s supposed cancer for so long that this just sounds like another bout of wishful thinking by people who want simple solutions to tyrants (that they would just go away and leave the rest of us alone).

Even if Xi Jinping were to suddenly become incapacitated, there is a high possibility that he would be propped up by elites (think Abdelaziz Bouteflika of Algeria, who ‘governed’ in a wheelchair post-stroke for years, until he was deposed when he was no longer useful) while they figure out who should be the next leader. Neither illness nor death may stop the heirs to a dictatorship from grabbing spoils as the big man dies (I highly suggest watching the 2017 film The Death of Stalin as a very amusing take on this issue).

This story just sounds like desperation, following rumours of Joe Biden’s purported infirmity, Donald Trump’s almost-assassination and Vladimir Putin’s alleged cancer. Xi Jinping is probably fine. Even if he isn’t, China is not about to turn into a blooming democracy. There is just nothing fun to see here. Same old men doing same old bullshit, and younger people hoping they would go away.
