China mediates unity deal between Hamas and Fatah over $70 billion promise of reconstruction funds for Gaza

The Chinese government has brought senior representatives of Palestinian factions, Hamas and Fatah to Beijing to sign a unity agreement, on the back of a pledge from China to provide access to $70 billion in funds for the reconstruction of Gaza.

The agreement was signed by Mahmoud al-Aloul, vice chairman of the Central Committee of Fatah and Mousa Abu Marzouk of Hamas. China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi presided over the ceremony.

The agreement does not bode well for a peace process between Israel and Palestine given that Israel is demanding the complete withdrawal of Hamas from Gaza. China is giving renewed legitimacy and backing to Hamas after Qatar, Hamas’s main sponsor, showed public regret over its backing to it.

Xi Jinping was not present at the ceremony further fuelling rumours of his ill-health.
