When there’s trouble call daddy. That’s what Prime Minister Robert Abela has been doing every time there has been a national crisis putting in doubt his informal title of “Supreme Leader”. When the electricity grid crisis hit last year, Robert Abela, as always, called his father, George Abela to provide him with a solution.
George Abela’s solution? His old friend and client Ryan Fava, the previous leader of the Malta Docker’s Union. Ryan Fava replaced Jonathan Cardona as Enemalta CEO.ย George Abela was the lawyer of the Malta Docker’s Union, back then being a break-away faction from the General Workers’ Union Metal section, and a schism from Sammy Meilak’s men. This was also during the time when George Abela was still working and supporting the break-away Labourites as he accumulated leverage against the Party in his rivalry with Alfred Sant.
Ryan Fava was quick to reciprocate to his promotion granted by the Abela’s. Ryan Fava went on to purchase a temporary power-station from Robert Abela’s own friends and business partners, the Bonnici brothers.
It’s easy to understand how the Abela dynasty runs the country when you get to know the people appointed in positions of power. The Abelas run the country as if it was their own personal fiefdom and the nepotism and rent-seeking this kind of system brings, inevitably results in the crises we experience today.
