As the Minister for Foreign Affairs Ian Borg is set to clinch the Deputy-Premiership, others are vying for the post of Deputy-Leader for Party Affairs. This is the position that was previously held by Daniel Micallef.
This post will be contested in what seems to be a battle by multiple factions on what appears, so far, to be an equal playing field. The election will be held between Party delegates and this limits Joseph Muscat’s influence over the race, in contrast to having it open to all of the members. In fact, for this very same reason, no one inside the Labour Party is calling for this election to be held with the members.
Contenders for the election include Owen Bonnici, Clifton Grima and Robert Abela’s preferred candidate Silvio Schembri. Miriam Dalli still has some delusional leadership aspirations and may also cast her name, although doing so would bring the Labour Party into further ridicule.
Robert Abela may also nominate Rebekah Borg to further push the abortion issue in the fore of politics with the aim of further disrupting the Nationalist Party.
The options are varied and the one thing for sure is that the election for the post will be very competitive.
