266 people were killed and 9000 others arrested and detained after Bangladeshis took out to the streets to protest the government’s restrictions on civil-service employment. The government cracked down on the student protests with violence with both both the police and the army having shot and tortured demonstrators. Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina blamed the protests on the Opposition and vowed to crack down on them.
Meanwhile, the army officer who tortured student leader Nahid Islam has been identified as Brigadier General Md. Nishatul Islam Khan: an officer of the 28th Long Course of the Bangladesh Army, currently serving as the Director of the Internal Affairs Bureau (IAB) at the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI).
