Teenage Yakut athlete from Russia dies by suicide after years of racial abuse

A 17-year-old Yakut sambist wrestler from Gorno-Altaisk, Russia, has taken her own life after years of racial abuse. Ksenia Cheponova, died in Novosibirsk, where she moved two years ago to study at the Olympic Reserve Sports College.

In a suicide note that she published on her Telegram channel, she claimed that she was unable to cope with the overwhelming racism she had experienced. She was bullied by her team-mates and her coach for her looks. The Yakuts are a small ethnic group of half a million people living mostly in northern Siberia.

The Russian state is a systematic racist nation that exploits its ethnic minorities for the benefit of Russians living in the west of the country. Russian ethnic minorities are more likely to be sent as cannon fodder in Ukraine than white Russians living in the west of the country.
