Binance investigation in Malta was killed after Sandro Camilleri left the Police Force

Last year, the Department of the Justice and the Securities Exchange Commission were extensively busy collecting a large swathe of information about Binance across the jurisdictions where it was registered. Local authorities, including the FIAU and the Maltese Police received multiple requests for information by the US authorities on Binance as they prepared for the arraignment for Binance’s founder and CEO Changpeng Zhao.

The DOJ’s investigation was well covered by the international press as it was ongoing and multiple articles were released about it in many foreign press outlets. Following multiple foreign press reports, then head of the Financial Crimes Investigation Department, Sandro Camilleri, made formal inquiries to his staff to conduct their own investigation.

The investigation was killed as soon Sandro Camilleri was forced to resign by Police Commissioner Angelo Gafa. The Binance investigation file remained empty.

Having been convicted for his crimes in a US court, a foreign court may not be able to convict Changpeng Zhao for the same crimes, but multiple countries which had their own investigations on Binance, such as Nigeria, imprisoned and charged other Binance officials working in their territories.
