Expect Labour to fight the Nationalist Party on abortion

As Labour struggles to survive in power, it will opportunistically use the abortion issue against the Nationalist Party as effectively as it can. This is one of the major issues over which the Nationalist Party will lose votes to third candidates making its potential electoral victory even more difficult.

The Nationalist Party should aim for a decisivie and major victory and not to skirt through a difficult victory which gives it a shaky parliament. Winning as much seats as possible in as many districts should be its target.

The Nationalist Party leader Bernard Grech is committing a grave error of judgement by sticking to his guns with regard to abortion. He needs to address the issue by at least giving the Party and its MPs more freedom on the issue and give up the Party’s strong opposition to it. Otherwise, PN risks obtaining power with a small margin making its power less secure on a longer-term basis.

Inevitably, PN also needs a very strong opposition to it once in power given that it is being given a free pass for the government. PN is not getting elected on its own merit, it’s getting the majority support because the Labour Pary has turned the government into a criminal enterprise. Restoring the rule of law shouldn’t be our only expectation as a free, prosperous and democratic.

    Yes the NP should be careful on this and avoid at all bleeding costs to revert to antiquated conservative rhetoric. It’s 2024 for col. The issue of abortion should not be politicized. It needs a referendum which includes only stake holders. The NP should counter this by immediately declaring that this issue will be settled by referendum, period. As for the electorate this is tricky. On the one hand there are a substantial amount of Labour leaning supporters who will abstain if their party pushes for abortion. Those who have decided to abstain in labour will do so irrespective. Some of those who agree wholeheartedly with abortion may decide to switch to Labour. And to this last group the message is clear, do not allow labour to keep ruining a generation. The issue of abortion WILL be sorted in one way or another irrespective of who is in government. Push for a stakeholder specific referendum and accept whatever comes out of that.

      “stakeholder specific referendum”?

      According to people who perceive termination in absolute black and white terms, stakeholders include zygotes, embryos and foetuses PLUS those who have not yet been conceived (mur siebhom!) will be expected to vote in such a referendum. Do they want to develop inside a uterus which is not ready and willing to accommodate them? YES or NO.

      Are kieku go laboratorju …. they don’t even get a chance. They are discarded if they’re surplus to requirements.

    I do not agree. If the nationalist support abortion, they will lose more then they would gain by supporting it

    The PN can, like PL, continue on its self-destructive and myopic strategy of appealing exclusively to semi-literates and geriatrics or look long term and sacrifice some votes from those with one foot in the grave.
