Celebrations are ongoing in Idlib and other cities in Syria over the rumoured death of Bashar al-Assad’s brother, Maher al-Assad. Earlier during the weekend, Maher al-Assad’s villa in the outskirts of Damascus was bombed by the Israeli Defence Force. Maher al-Assad was the commander of the Republican Guard (the presidential guard responsible for the President and Damascus) and the 4th Armoured Division that is linked with Hezbollah and the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guards.
Maher al-Assad is know for various atrocities and terrorist activities including his involvement in the murder of ex-Lebanese Prime Minister Rafic Hariri, the use of chemical weapons on Syrians, the arrest and torture of dissidents, and the shooting of unarmed protesters.
