Two prominent Maltese physicians, Dr. Martin V. Balzan and Dr. Arthur G. Felice, have been awarded the prestigious Gold Decoration of Honour by the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS) for their outstanding contributions to European healthcare and medical education.
Dr. Martin V. Balzan, a leading figure in European pulmonology, served as President of the UEMS Section of Pneumology from 2010 to 2022. He played a pivotal role in securing recognition for the European pulmonology curriculum and fostering collaborations with the European Respiratory Society. On a national level, Dr. Balzan helped reverse Malta’s medical brain drain by spearheading specialist recognition legislation and postgraduate training programs.
With 68 international publications, Dr. Balzan has led numerous European projects on patient safety, e-learning, and air quality research. He currently serves as Vice-President of the Standing Committee of European Doctors (CPME), focusing on workforce development and the health effects of climate change.
Dr. Arthur G. Felice, an expert in surgical education, is the President of the European Board of Surgery and UEMS Division of General Surgery. He has significantly contributed to maintaining high standards in surgical education across Europe, particularly through his role in the UEMS EBSQ General Surgery Examination. Dr. Felice has also been instrumental in developing European Training Requirements for General Surgery, ensuring quality and consistency in surgical training.
The UEMS praised both physicians for their long-standing dedication and contributions to European medicine, recognizing their leadership in shaping medical standards and education across the continent. These awards highlight Malta’s significant role in advancing healthcare within the European Union.
