In a stunning display of strength and determination, Tenishia Thornton has claimed the title of European Champion at the European Junior Championships in Warsaw. This amazing performance is set to be celebrated for years to come.
Thornton opened the Snatch segment with a powerful 86kg lift, but tension mounted as she narrowly missed her second attempt at 89kg. Refusing to be deterred, she returned with steely focus to nail her final lift at 89kg, taking the lead in a fierce contest where her Turkish rival lifted 88kg for second and an Italian competitor claimed third with 87kg.
The Clean and Jerk phase upped the stakes even further. Thornton started strong at 107kg but missed a 110kg attempt on the jerk, momentarily slipping to fourth as a Romanian lifter surged to 111kg. In a thrilling final attempt, Thornton summoned her full strength, executing a perfect 112kg lift that not only secured her the European title but also set a new national record, electrifying the crowd and cementing her place at the top.
With a total of 201kg, Thornton clinched the championship, outlifting her closest competitors, Romania with 196kg and Spain with 194kg.
This incredible victory, fueled by the support of the Malta Olympic Committee and SportMalta, showcases the power of dedication and team backing behind Thornton’s rise to the European elite.
