The Malta U17 women’s team suffered a shock 10-0 defeat against Ukraine in a European Championship qualifier. Although Ukraine were expected to win comfortably, no one could have predicted such a ritual humiliation. Inevitably, there were recriminations on social media following this terrible result with coach Clint Tabone coming in for considerable criticism.
This mostly centred on player choices with some parents complaining that their children were sidelined. However there were also words of praise for Tabone in certain quarters even from his fellow peers.

First Half: Ukraine Finds Their Rhythm and Malta suffer six goals
The game began with a balanced contest in midfield as both teams sought to establish control. However, Ukraine quickly broke the deadlock with a well-executed attack down the right. A precise cross found Evelina Kuptsova, who calmly finished from close range.
Malta responded positively, showing promise in midfield play but struggled to find the decisive final ball. Goalkeeper Julia Maria Zarb kept Malta in the game with a strong save against Viktoriia Savkina in the 20th minute after a Ukrainian counterattack.
Malta’s best chance came in the 25th minute when Tea Kimamo surged down the left wing and crossed to Kay Axiak, whose stretching effort forced a save from Ukrainian goalkeeper Anna Kharchenko. Moments later, Ukraine punished Malta with a swift counterattack, with Milena Ivanchenko doubling their lead after a brilliant solo effort in the 28th minute.
From there, Ukraine began to assert their dominance. Karina Lespukh struck twice in quick succession, capitalizing on well-timed through passes, while Daria Kolodii added two more before halftime, giving Ukraine a commanding 6-0 lead at the break.
Second Half: Relentless Ukrainian Attack
Ukraine continued their relentless form in the second half, with Viktoriia Savkina converting a rebound early on to make it 7-0. Malta showed moments of resilience but struggled to contain Ukraine’s attacking prowess. Goals from Savkina and Sofiia Konovalova in the 64th and 66th minutes, followed by Zoriana Hladun’s stoppage-time strike, sealed the 10-0 result.
Malta attempt to come back and show fighting spirit
Despite the heavy defeat, Malta displayed commendable fighting spirit, battling for every ball until the final whistle. Tea Kimamo and Kay Axiak stood out with their attacking intent, while Julia Maria Zarb made crucial saves to limit the scoreline which could even have been worse

The result reflects the strength of Ukraine in Group B2, as they showcased their attacking depth and clinical finishing. For Malta, the match provides valuable experience as they continue to develop and build for future competitions.
