European Parliament pledges continued support for Ukraine in Extraordinary Plenary marking 1,000 days of war

The European Parliament once again expressed its unwavering support for Ukraine at an Extraordinary Plenary Session on the occasion of 1,000 days since the Russian invasion. In her address to the assembly, President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola assured: “We are with Ukraine until freedom, until peace, how long it takes.”

Metsola condemned the suffering of the Ukrainian people in the past 1000 days, referring to these periods as “days of terror, of unimaginable loss, and trouble.” She praised Ukraine’s brave and strong spirit and asserted to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who joined the meeting through a video link, that “Ukrainians have shown the world the true definition of courage.”

President Metsola also confirmed that the European Parliament is united in solidarity, noting that the invasion is not only an aggression against Ukraine but against the very principles of the international rules-based order. “It is an assault on our virtues, on peace, on democracy, and on freedom, which are under threat for each one of us,” she said.

Metsola re-stated the European Parliament’s aspiration to promote a peace that recognizes justice and dignity, emphasising the principle of “nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine.”ย  She stressed once more that the institution will always be on the side of Ukraine in its battle for freedom and independence.

President Zelenskyy, addressing the plenary, expressed gratitude for the European Parliament’s consistent support. “A thousand days of war is a tremendous challenge,” Zelenskyy said, adding, “We must do everything to end this war fairly and justly, as you mentioned, Roberta. And of course, together. Let us make the next year a year of peace.”

In the course of the plenary, President Zelenskyy voiced his appreciation for the aid offered by the European Parliament throughout the years. “A thousand days of war is a tremendous challenge,” said Zelenskyy, “”We must do everything to end this war fairly and justly. And of course, together. Let us make the next year, a year of peace.”

The session showcased the unity of the European Union in response to the Russian aggression, which signified the commitment of the Union towards upholding the values of peace and democracy around the world.
