Italian journalist Cecilia Sala is spending the new year’s day in prison in Iran. She was arrested last week but no charges have been issued against her so far. Cecilia Sala regularly reports on near eastern affairs for the Italian press and is being held in Evin prison in Tehran.
Italian President Sergio Mattarella said that “we are close to seeing her soon in Italy” hinting at possible successful talks between the Italian and the Iranian authorities. The Italian press is also reporting that talks between the Italian and Iranian government’s involve an exchange of Iranian prisoners in Italy for the repatriation of Cecilia Sala, effectively making Cecilia Sala a hostage of the Iranian government.
