The FBI has identified the attacker who rammed a truck unto a crowd of people on new year’s day in New Orleans. Up to 15 people have been recorded to have been killed after Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year old citizen from Texas rammed a rented truck on people celebrating new year’s day. He exited the truck and shot at police officers as they tried to arrest him and was killed on the scene. The FBI found an ISIS flag in his truck and other weapons including bombs.
Press reports describe Jabbar as a US Army veteran who served in Afghanistan and spent ten years in the US military before deciding to join ISIS recently. He was born in the US and raised as Christian but converted to Islam at a young age.
Extensive research shows that US Army veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan are at risk of developing mental illnesses with up to 14-16% of veterans suffering from conditions such depression and PTSD. Although most US veterans transition to civilian life with success, a small percentage to crime as it struggles with readjustment to civilian life.
